“There are some things I do not need to be told. Even a blind man could see that wolf would never have left you willingly.”

“We had to throw rocks,” she said miserably. “I told her to run, to go be free, that I didn’t want her anymore. There were other wolves for her to play with, we heard them howling, and Jory said the woods were full of game, so she’d have deer to hunt. Only she kept following, and finally we had to throw rocks. I hit her twice. She whined and looked at me and I felt so ‘shamed, but it was right, wasn’t it? The queen would have killed her.“

Gendry doesn’t recognize her, not at first. She’s grown into her face (not too long anymore, not too gaunt) and her hair tumbles past her shoulders in a knotted mess. She’s still small, but assassin aren’t typically known for their size, and he’s sworn to defend the Queen in the North at all costs, and it’s instinct that drives his hammer up in a block. She’s a slip of a thing, and easily maneuvers under his defenses, leaves a long, narrow gash up his side. But in the end, he outweighs her more than two stones, and bears her to the ground with his weight as her chains.

It isn’t until Lady Sansa screams, “No! Stop!” that recognition cuts through the adrenaline and bloodlust of battle hazing over his perception. He recognizes that flinty look in the assassin’s grey eyes.

His hammer slips from his slack fingers for the first time since he took up service to the Queen in the North.
